Rome – ESI at the OSCE Security Days: Refocusing Migration and Security - Bridging National and Regional Responses

ESI's Gerald Knaus participated in a conference organized by the OSCE. The event in Rome was to stimulate a constructive and forward-looking discussion of rapidly evolving migration trends in and around the OSCE area and their security implications.

Gerald spoke at a panel moderated by OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier on the role of the OSCE and international partners in resolving the refugeee crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean.

ESI has argued since September that Turkey, Germany and Greece hold the key to any solution. This crisis will either destroy the international asylum system as we know it or mark a step forward towards a more just a regime to deal with asylum. It may mark the decline of human rights values in the EU or see them reaffirmed in the face of resistance.
