"Will Turkey and the Western Balkans ever join the EU?"

The European Stability Initiative, founded by Gerald Knaus in 1999, is one of Europe's most successful institutes working for a deeper understanding of the challenges the EU faces in its policy towards Turkey and the Balkans. On Friday, 6 March, Gerald will speak  in Warsaw on the prospects of Turkey and the countries of the Western Balkans to acceed to the European Union.

Reports on Turkey such as Islamic Calvinists. Change and Conservatism in central Anatolia redefined the way political developments in Turkey were seen in Europe. Other ground breaking papers include The worst in class: How the international protectorate hurts the European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina or The cost of non-Europe. Textile towns and the future of Serbia.

Most recently, ESI has been supported by ERSTE Stiftung in producing the TV project "Return to Europe", a series of 10 one-hour TV documentaries featuring countries and cities in the Balkans. The aim of the series is to acquaint viewers with this fascinating region and its peoples, their recent past and their struggle for a better future in Europe.

The latest of these films – Istanbul, Truth Fear and Hope – will be shown in Warsaw at the Centre for Eastern Studies (CES) at 17:00 on 6 March 2009.
