Berlin, Istanbul – New ESI Junior Fellows

Ayse Patan, Julia Edlund, Liudmila Mashalova

From this July, three new junior fellows will work with us on our Balkan and Turkey research projects. Please learn more about them here:

Liudmila Mashalova (Russia) joined ESI in Berlin in July 2013 to work on the project "The Balkans and its Return to Europe". Liudmila holds a BA degree in International Relations of St. Petersburg State University and studied European Affairs and Political Science at Sciences Po Paris and Freie Universität Berlin. She worked at the Leningrad Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where she was involved in working with foreign business delegations and organization of conferences on transregional cooperation. Liudmila also participated in AIESEC student association dealing with international internships for young specialists both in Russia and abroad. Liudmila's interests are focused on EU Enlargement, European Neighbourhood Policy in the post-soviet space and EU-Russia relations.

Ayşe Patan (Germany) joined ESI in Istanbul in July 2013 to work on the current political developments in Turkey after the Gezi Park protests and their impact on Turkey-EU relations as well as on perceptions of Turkey in Europe. Ayşe studied political science and international relations in Hamburg, Istanbul and Berlin and is currently finishing her Master's degree in Public Policy and Management at the University of Potsdam. Her interest areas include Turkish domestic politics and foreign policy, with a current focus on Turkey-EU relations. Before joining ESI, she did an internship at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Istanbul.

Julia Edlund (Sweden) holds a BA degree from Uppsala University (Sweden) where she studied history, political science and Turkish language and an MA degree in Turkish Studies from Sabanci University (Istanbul, Turkey). During her studies, the main areas of interest were media studies and democracy/human rights in Turkey. She recently finished an internship at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in the department of Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Her main field of work was Swedish development cooperation with Eastern Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey.  She will join ESI in Istanbul in September.
