Bogota – ESI at workshop on new strategies and practices in human rights

ESI's Gerald Knaus participated in a three days workshop on New Strategies & Practices in Human Rights. Organized by the Human Rights Lab at the University of los Andes, with support from the Open Society Foundations, the workshop was part of a longer-term effort to consolidate a community of human rights educators and trainers interested in promoting a more strategic and outcome-oriented human rights practice. The workshop took place at the University of los Andes in Bogotá, on March 19-21.
Based on previous discussions at a meeting at Harvard in October 2014, the group was working together to move from brainstorming ideas to prototyping and vetting solutions. To that end, it sough to bring together scholars and practitioners from different disciplines, regions, and backgrounds to collaborate in small groups, to generate viable new ideas how to better practice human rights work and achieve better outcomes.
Participants included Douglas Johnson, Harvard University, former head of Center for Victims of Torture for 24 years; Tyler Giannini, co-director of the Harvard Law School human rights program; Kathryn Sikking, Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, Elazar Barkan, Columbia University; César Rodríguez Garavito, Universidad de los Andes & Dejusticia; Leonard Benardo, Associate Director, Open Society Foundations; and others.
