Königstein – ESI presentation on borders, migration, and the EU
9 October 2023
ESI’s Gerald Knaus was invited to give a presentation on “Europe's deadly borders and the failure of the EU” at the Königsteiner Forum.
In his presentation, Gerald examined Europe’s deadly and inhumane borders and the failure of the EU in its migration policy. Presenting empirical evidence, he challenged right-wing populists’ claims that irregular migration is an existential threat and that controlling it necessarily leads to “ugly pictures”, a euphemism for sheer border violence.
At the same time, Gerald presented morally defensible arguments for reducing irregular migration and emphasised the need for migration agreements based on mutual interests to achieve humane borders and policies.
