Ankara – ESI at symposium on migration cooperation between Turkey, Germany and the European Union

ESI’s Gerald Knaus was invited to the high-level migration symposium “Migration Policy in Transition: Pathways for Cooperation between Türkiye, Germany and the European Union” organised by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) in Ankara. Gerald participated in the panel “Migration at the Crossroads: Strengthening EU–Türkiye Relations in Times of Global Change.”
In his presentation, Gerald examined migration cooperation between Turkey and Europe from multiple perspectives. He noted that the 2016 agreement reduced migrant crossings in the Aegean by 97 percent, saving thousands of lives. He argued that such agreements can offer humanitarian solutions and called for the EU and Turkey to update and revive this model.
The other speakers were Ambassador Thomas Ossowski, Head of EU Delegation to Türkiye and Ambassador Ceren Yazgan, Director General for Migration and Visa Affairs, Foreign Affairs Türkiye. The panel was moderated by Gülru GEZER, Diplomat (R), Director of ANKA.
