Sarajevo – ESI discusses EU enlargement with Swedish diplomats posted in the Balkans

ESI senior analyst Adnan Ćerimagić spoke at a regional seminar in Sarajevo attended by Swedish deputy heads of mission posted in the Western Balkans and Croatia.
In two sessions, Adnan addressed the changing geopolitical landscape in Europe since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and its implications for the Western Balkans. He discussed the evolution of EU enlargement policy, highlighting both the new momentum and the persistent structural obstacles facing the region. Drawing on ESI’s research, he contrasted perceptions of progress with the political and institutional realities on the ground.
During a keynote speech at the seminar dinner, Adnan placed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s internal challenges in the broader context of regional dynamics and the evolving transatlantic relationship, including the outlook under the new United States administration.
The seminar was organised by Helena Lagerlöf, Swedish Ambassador in Sarajevo and offered an opportunity for open and informed exchanges on the EU’s role in South-East Europe at a critical time for the continent.
