ESI's Gerald Knaus was invited to a public debate on borders in Europe at the Berlin Wall Memorial. He ourlined the challenge by new populist movements across Europe to democratic principles such as the separation of powers, plurarlism, freedom of press, and parliamentarism. He argued that core human rights conventions are under threat as never before in recent years. We need to be focused, building coalitions to preserve what we inherited. That is a big battle for the next years.

The debate will be aired on inforadio.de on 6 January 2019 at 11:05 (in German).

The other panelists were:

  • Andrea Despot, Direktorin der Europäischen Akademie Berlin
  • Ulrike Jureit, Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung
  • Regina Römhild, HU Berlin, Institut für Europäische Ethnologie

Moderator: Harald Asel
